Founded following a tionól (gathering) of pipers in Bettystown, Co. Meath, in April 1968, Na Píobairí Uilleann’s mission was to save the uilleann pipes from fading away, when fewer than 100 players remained worldwide.

In celebration of NPU’s immense success in the almost six decades since, and the rising number of women and girls playing the pipes worldwide, Emer Mayock will host this very special Tionól na mBan in front of the Whitworth Hall on Laurence St.

It was here, 50 years ago, that iconic music collector and NPU founding member Breandán Breathnach demonstrated how the pipes worked to a curious Drogheda audience.
